The Louisiana purchase was a purchase made by president Thomas Jefferson that gained the US the Louisiana territory, which doubled the size of the nation. This is important because it not only expanded the size of the nation, but also set the United States on a path of imperialism. The Louisiana Purchase was the first example of the United States expanding its territory, and it wouldn’t be the last, as is seen in the later idea of Manifest Destiny.
