Amlici was after the Order of the Nehors. He was also a very cunning man and tried to persuade the people to make him king.
This alarmed the people and a vote was taken. This vote stirred up a lot of contention, but when the vote came in it was against Amlici.

Not being content with this Amlici persuaded his followers to separate themselves from the Nephites and the anointed him their King.

At this point his people became known as Amlicites, as they had separated themselves from the Nephites.
