The date is this birthday- Gorbachev was the last leader of the Soviet Union and though he believed in socialist ideas he felt that change was needed. This movement for reforms is known as PERESTROIKA and he achieved this reform through the policies of GLASNOST which means openness. He allowed people to criticize the government and to freely express themselves which clearly exhibits a shift towards democracy and a more liberal approach.
