Trade with foreign countries continued to be essential to America's economic development. The War of 1812 occurred because America traded with both France and Britain during the Napoleonic Wars and Britain saw America as supporting the enemy. Britain did not recognize America as being a neutral nation/power. On June 14, 1812 Congress declared war against Britain. Some Americans saw the war as a way to remove the British who were influencing the Native Americans in the west as well as removing the British in Canada.
