On October 12th 1492 Christopher Columbus and his crew of 3 ships named the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria reached what is now known as the Bahamas. Columbus was a Portuguese explorer who embarked on a ten week voyage funded by the Spanish monarchs to find the West Indies. Columbus was not the first to discover America, but his voyage opened doors for European powers to colonize and prosper in the New World, as well as enslave the natives and imported African slaves.Añadido al timeline:
