In 1611, Peter Easton leads an attack on the Basque people who have raided and taken over harbour grace, one of his colonies. He has a bloody battle win them on land and over sea, which results in the death of dozens of his men, who are buried in the church courtyard. At this point, Richard Whitbourne is sent by the Admiral to investigate Easton's activity, as news of his destruction has reached London and is costing England lots of money. They believe that other men like John Guy are encouraging his pirate behaviour, which he is, but against his will. Easton takes Whitbourne prisoner, although Whitbourne accounts being treated civilly and and well. They sail for 11 weeks together, become friends, and Whitbourne offers him a pardon, purchased for 2,000 pounds. Easton accepts, takes over 4 Spanish treasure ships, and retires. He settles in France as a member of the elite where he builds a palace and separate warehouse for his 2 million pounds in loot. There is lore surrounding the pirate princess Sheila O'Connell falling in love with one of his crewmen and giving birth to the first English child on Newfoundland soil.
