1 ene 1611 año - The Rise of Peter Easton

Descripción:

Peter Easton was the most successful pirate to come out of Atlantic Canada. He was a pirate admiral and transitioned from legal privateer to pirate. following the peace in 1604. He started out attacking Spanish ships. After his pirate career, he was pardoned and lived the life of a prince. He mainly operated in the English channel, and sailed through West Africa and the Caribbean, eventually landing in North Newfoundland. In Newfoundland, he establishes a harbor grace just north of Cuper's. He has a fleet of five ships that need repairs and builds a defensive battery and cannon. He sets up a small house for his crew as well as a small settlement in Kelly's Island. Kelly's island made a good base as it was in the middle of the bay and high enough to look out for danger. Kelly's island is also the site of alleged treasure buried by Easton. Easton routinely hunted and plundered fishing vessels, and in 1612-13 he takes 25 French vessels, 12 port vessels, 1 Flemish ship and 30 English ships. At this point, his fleet consists of 10 ships, 100 canons, and 1000 men. He begins to disrupt nearby settlements including Cuper's Cove, which is already struggling to survive for many reasons: poor fishing conditions, poor weather, no crops being grown, sickness, etc. He repeatedly makes visits and the people of Cuper's Cove must pay him in provisions and livestock in order for him to leave them be. For this, he promises not to attack them and to defend them. He sticks to his wordm however, there are other negative repercussions, including Cuper's Cove losing trading opportunity to the native Beothuk people in order to keep an eye on Easton.
