This was important because it was not meant to be intercepted. The Zimmerman note was Germany trying to make a military alliance with Mexico. This alliance was meant to be used if the United States joined the war against Germany. Mexico would recover Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. The British intercepted the telegram and shared the meaning of it with America. Arthur Zimmermann even admitted that the telegram was a real offer on March 3. This was one reason why the U.S. entered the war.
