17 abr 1947 año - Zika 1946

Descripción:

Zika is a vector-borne disease which is spread by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. These mosquitoes tend to bite during the day and night. This disease can be passed down from a pregnant woman to her unborn baby and cause birth defects.

It is important to be cautious if you are pregnant and travel to places affected by the Zika virus, as microcephaly could occur during pregnancy. Microcephaly is a condition where the baby’s head doesn’t grow at a typical rate according to babies of the same gender and age. Their heads are typically smaller than expected due to less development of the brain and if the brain stops growing, then the head will also stop growing, leaving this noticeable as the child continues to grow. This condition is very rare and people living with this condition are still able to live normal lives but may experience some challenges like shorter stature, delays in speech, hyperactivity, and facial distortions. Schlitzie was a famous actor and performer who lived with microcephaly. It is still unclear what the exact causal relation is between Zika virus and microcephaly. Pregnant women are still advised to not travel to Zika infected areas and you can also get Zika through unprotected sex with an infected person, even if they do not show symptoms.

Zika was first documented in 1947 with a case in Uganda, originally found in the Rhesus monkey. However, the Zika virus was most commonly known from the 2016 outbreak that caused panic across the world. The first case in humans was said to be in 1952 in Uganda and Tanzania. This then spread Southeast Asia in 1966, to Nigeria in 1969, and in the late 1990s, in India, Pakistan, Indonesia and Malaysia. The first major outbreak (before 2016) occurred in 2007 in the Island of Yap in Micronesia with 200 people affected. There then were more outbreaks in French Polynesia with 35,000 cases in 2013, 4,000 cases in Brazil (where some led to microcephaly) and the most infamous outbreak in 2016 which had cases recorded all over North and South America. There are currently no vaccines and medicine to prevent Zika.

Symptoms: Many people infected with Zika virus will not show symptoms or will only show mild symptoms. In extreme cases, the symptoms will include fever, rash, headache, joint pain, muscle pain and conjunctivitis.
