Though gunpowder was first developed for entertainment purposes and has been recorded as far back as 142 CE, its first known use as a weapon was during the Tang Dynasty. It eventually redefined global military strategy and revolutionized weapon production and usage. The image illustrates gunpowder catching fire, which it did literally in use and metaphorically as it spread all across the world.
