The MaCartney mission was a failed attempt by the British to increase trade relations and gain favor with the Chinese by sending Lord MaCartney and an embassy to their court. Even though MaCartney embraced Chinese custom and kowtowed to the empire, China refused to expand trade with Britain or the world. This can be symbolized by a locked door that hints at riches behind it.
