Both Israel and Judah paid tribute to the nation of Assyria, however the Assyrians didn't find the tribute enough and attacked northern Israel and conquered it but Judah remained until the rising Babylonian empire seized control of Judah, which also apparently destroyed the temple king Solomon built which housed the ark of the covenant.
