The Espionage Act of 1917 was enacted on June 15, 1917. The law was extended on May 16, 1918, by the Sedition Act of 1918.A set of amendments to the Espionage Act prohibiting many forms of speech.
The Sedition Act of 1918 made it a federal offense to use "disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language" about the Constitution, the government, the American uniform, or the US flag.
