like the Mars 2 the Mars three was also designed and tasked with flying out to and studying the surface/atmosphere of Mars. it was also the first spacecraft to achieve a soft landing on mars (for comparison look at Luna 2). the Mars 3 probe was launched with a Proton booster with an upper and escape stage and weighed 4993.47 pounds.
