Nixon spent 7 days in China in an attempt to improve U.S.-China relations and represented the first time a U.S. President had visited the PRC. Nixon established plans for a permanent trade relationship with China, noting the end of a 25 year span of non-communication between the two countries. The visit was impacted by fears that the Soviet Union would gain more influence over China during the Cold War.
