The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended segregation in public places by banning employment discrimination on the basis of color, race, religion, sex or nationality. The act was signed into law by U.S. President Lyndon Johnson on July 2, 1964. It was made following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, who had proposed the legislation.
