The CCP was founded by Li Dazhou and Chen Duxiu, influenced by the ideals of marxism after the bolshevik victory in 1917. Initially, the party had a successful alliance with the nationalist KMT party. However, Chiang Kai-Shek took a violent turn against the CCP with the instigation of the Shanghai Massacre of 1927, purging the KMT of all its communist ties. Many CCP members, such as Mao Zedong, fled to the countryside where they garnered support from the peasants currently residing there.
