The election was a long one, between Burr, Jefferson, and Adams, Jefferson and Burr tied with 73 electoral votes and Adams with 65 electoral votes. Jefferson won when Hamilton, who disliked both Jefferson and Burr, but hated Burr more, stated that he was voting for Jefferson. People voted for Jefferson after that. He strengthened the navy, reduced the national debt by one-third, did the Louisiana Purchase, and supported Lewis and Clark's expedition which opened new land.
