Pope Innocent III is considered one of the most powerful popes in the history of Christianity. In 1215 he called the Fourth Lateran Council to reform the church. This council codified the doctrine of transubstantiation, condemned various groups like the Waldensians, and instituted the inquisition to root out heresy.
