Islam began to rapidly and aggressively expand after the death of Muhammed. Between 670 and 705 it spread through the Maghreb, or North Africa. Carthage had been a major city in the Roman Empire and in Christianity, and in 697 it fell, symbolizing the near total wiping out of Christianity in North Africa.
