Washington DC was chosen as the capital because of a compromise between Alexander Hamilton and the northern states and Thomas Jefferson and the southern states. Hamilton wanted the federal government to focus on repaying the war debt, Jefferson wanted the capital in a location that would benefit slave-holding agricultural states.
