The USSR was a socialist / communist empire in europe that lasted from 1917-1991 that was a large collaborative of nations which developed many other countries post USSR. Russia before the soviet union was this prompted Lenin to blah blah this is a shift to the left because
“The Goal of Socialism is communism” -Vladimir Lenin, although the Soviet union was stated to be socialist this quote from the man who spearheaded its development displays that the Soviet union was attempting to create a communist utopia.

Before the establishment of the Soviet Union in 1917, Russia had been in a severe downturn for about 85 years. Vladimir Lenin thought the best way for Russia to develop was through Marxist principles. Unlike the method Marx suggested where capitalism would be introduced, causing the abuse of workers and the eventual worker uprising where workers would seize the means of production producing a socialist/communist utopia, Lenin decided to “skip” the introduction of capitalism and instead began with a socialist government that would provide a public system of production creating a socialist utopia from scratch instead of from capitalism. Lenin and other educated individuals from Russia decided to implement this idea, this prompted a large civil war in Russia which ended in Lenin's victory creating the first ever government built on Marxist principles. This is an extreme shift to the left as a communist government is built on collectivist/ left based principles.
