Built by Roger II for engagements with Islamic rulers and subjects from various backgrounds. Decoration reflects effort to incorporate all cultures present in Sicily (Islamic, Byzantine, Greek). Rogers sons converted it from reception hall into palatine chapel
hybrid plan: long design of basilica in reception hall, cross-in-square but with squinches framed with nested arches specific to Sicily
moqarnas ceiling: polylobal decorations shaped with tightly packed angles, resembling stalactites from which they take their name, richly painted with scenes from princely cycle
decoration: multiple Pantokrators (in dome and in two apses), scenes from the life of Christ on walls under dome, nativity in apse
throne recess: Roger combines elements recalling the Temple of Solomon, Byzantine emperors, and Islamic thrones of caliphs
inscriptions: Greek and Latin used for inclusivity
