In the Summer of 1964 Diamond took his first trip to the tropical island of New Guinea. Originally he want to study the native bird population but soon found he was fascinated with the people what lived in the seemingly wild jungle there. This was the trip that first got Diamond started down the path of being a writer, speaking to a large audience instead of just a select few with his works. As he began to develop a second career as a evolutionary biologist of New Guinea birds he gained opertunities to write for multiple magazines until he finally published his first book and began writing to the oublic at large.
