After the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party, the sons of liberty held a Continental Congress. They decided, after several meetings, to declare independence from Britain. They enlisted Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence, which had many drafts and rewritten many times to appease the representatives of each colony. The Declaration was like a list of reasons why the colonies were splitting from Britain. The Declaration of Independence was ratified on July 4, 1776.
