The date is the day is occurred- With the discovery of Cuba having ties with the Soviet Union, the US decided to launch an attack against them using Cuban exiles. The US trained them and supplied them with weapons for them to overthrow the government but the attempt failed miserably. No air-cover was provided by the US and they ultimately denied any involvement in the attack.
