The once-abundant palms of Jadriya, which formed a dense palm grove, became the symbol of a devastated ecosystem, sacrificed to the war economy, during the Iran–Iraq War. Here, the luxuriant palms depicted by the Iraqi Al Ani form an eloquent contrast to the war photographs of the Iranian Bahman Jalali, in which palm trees serve as military barricades. The palm groves, however, were chopped down to improve visibility of the land from the air.
