20 jun 1791 año - Flight to Varennes

Descripción:

Louis XVI and his family attempt to flee France and they are caught at Varrenes. It becomes clear that Louis has no intention of cooperating with the revolution. The convention claims that he was abducted but the public see through this thinly veiled lie. Although it is seemingly impossible, Louis is able to amass more public distrust. Moreover, he is so fearful of this change that he attempts to flee the country. A shift of power has occurred where the King has no control over his own government and people.

This will ultimately lead to the Declaration of Pillnitz. Where Emperor Leopold the II of Austria, brother of Marie, and others promise to intervene in the revolutionary cause to maintain the monarchy and the royal family. This would only serve to further incense revolutionaries and convince them that they were surrounded by autocrats attempting to undue the justice of republicanisms. This also served to beginning to fictionalize the revolutionary leaders into several parties all displaying differing degrees of radicalism as a response to foreign threats.

The image bellow is one of the many examples of royal propaganda that emerged after Louis' failed attempt to leave France. Here the royal family is seen clumsily crawling through the sewers. Louis is nice and plump, and the women flaunt their breasts. The general public thought of Marie Antoinette as a harlot. On the far right, a man can be seen reaching up the skirt of a woman. The middle woman can be seen flaunting her rear. And lastly, the figure on the left, presumably Marie, can be seen placing a much smaller figure's hand on her genitals. (probably her son's) Louis, it seems, is the only one getting no action. There also appears to be a bottle of liquor in is pocket (consitent with absurd oppulence related to the monarchy).
