Airplanes were first used in the war to spy over the enemy trenches when they didn't have machine guns on airplanes. Once machine guns were used on airplanes their would be air fights called 'dog fights' and the airplanes would shoot into enemy trenches.

Airplanes made it easier to wound troops in trenches.
