Ottoman Empire started as a Turkish tribe in Asian Minor (Anatolia) - their main religion was Islam.

Under the leadership of Osman I, they continued expanding over southeastern Europe, the Middle East, and at its peak, some of Africa.
On may 29, 1453, Byzantine Empire was attacked by Ottoman army, which was commanded by Sultan Mehmed II, who was 21 years old.

Under the command of Constantine XI, it was hard to break through Constantinople’s double city wall. Ottoman army finally conquered Constantinople after 53 long sieges.
The capital of the Ottoman Empire was transferred to Constantinople. This ended the Byzantine Empire, which lasted for almost 1200 years.

Constantinople was renamed into Istanbul. Hagia Sophia was turned into Mosque.
When Constantinople fell, many scholars and artists fled to Italy. This helped speed up the Renaissance movement in Italy.
