Just weeks after the Civil War ended, President Lincoln was assassinated by actor John Wilkes Booth while watching a play, Booth bitter over the Confederacy’s loss. This left the role of overseeing Reconstruction to the new president Andrew Johnson. Johnson became the first president to be impeached. Johnson wished for Southern states to be restored into the Union as quickly as possible as he clashed frequently with Radical Republicans and did not give much concern to the rights of former slaves. Because of Lincoln’s assassination that made Johnson president, Reconstruction was drawn out and ineffective in bridging the North-South divide and protecting former slaves.
