The crusading movement involved men and women from Europe.
- Christians believed that the Crusades were a path of salvation for those who participated. The reward for participating was the forgiveness of sins, debts, taxes.
- Another reason for the Crusades was to secure the Church’s power in Europe.
- The Crusades were promoted by Christ’s name and led by crusaders who received special privileges.
- The Crusade’s enemies were the ones who were not Christian, the ones who challenged Church’s teachings and questioned the pope’s authority.

Effects:
- 1 - 2 millions of people died during the Crusades.
- Roman Catholic Church experienced an increase in wealth
- Pope had more power
- Trade and transportation also improved. There was a constant demand for supplies and transportation, which involved improvements on ship-building and manufacturing supplies.
