Major political reforms came under Khatami's rule. Despite being a cleric, Khatami previously spent time as a newspaper editor fighting against censorship, influencing many of his beliefs and policies. As a result, under his control he supported rights for women and minority ethnic groups, limited censorship of the press, made organizing political parties easier, tried to improve relations with the United States, and expressed the importance of creating a strong civil society.
