His first attack on Jerusalem was a failure, with Antigonus still holding his city together. By 37 B.C.E. Herod had gained all of the country. By order of Antony, Cassius, and the Roman governor of Syria, Antony gave Herod some help which allowed him to take Jerusalem. Antigonus was captured by the Romans and was beheaded at the wish of Herod. So Hasmonean rule over an independent nation in the land of Israel was finally brought to an end, and the Romans took control.
