After the declaration of a unified Germany, the former king of Prussia was declared as the first emperor of the German Empire.

The new empire followed a new federalist constitution with Bismarck being placed in one of the most influential new government roles- chancellor of Germany. The chancellor controlled much of the German government's affairs.
