The Sugar Act of 1764 was one of the first new taxes after the French and Indian War. This law would not only raise money for the British government but it would also increase British control over the colonies. The goal of the Sugar Act was to make merchants want to pay the lower duty instead of smuggling the molasses. This would raise more money for the British government.
