Having arrived in Moscow which was abandoned by the Russians before they even arrived, the French were forced to trek back in the snow through makeshift hospitals for sick, in filthy clothes and filthy conditions without food. The result? Thousands of died primarily of typhus on the way back through the harsh winter.
