The publishing of The Praise of Folly was an important event because it was one of the first times in which the church was challenged. This book challenged the way in which the church runs. Erasmus writes about how he believes that Christianity should be based on what the Bible says, not based off of the ceremonies and rules of the church. The pope declared Erasmus a heretic and urged people to burn his writings.
