A land deal between the US and Mexico, instigated by the US desire to build a transcontinental railroad terminating in what is now the southeastern US. The deal consisted of Mexico selling 29,760 square miles of land in southern Arizona and New Mexico in return for $10 million. With this treaty, the US gained all the land to form modern-day contiguous United States.
