In the 1400s artists rediscovered perspective which gave their art a whole new dimension. After its rediscovery their have been few famous realistic paintings that have not used the technique. Perspective completely changed art after the middle ages allowing for the shift from the flat religious paintings seen before to the works of Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo all the way to the hyper-realism seen today.
