The death of Anastasia, Ivan’s wife, in 1560 was the turning point in his reign. Before her death, during his “good period” he established just laws, won great victories and overall improved russia. After her death on the other hand he became suspicious and paranoid of the nobles and so created a new police force. The only job of this force was to assassinate anyone Ivan deemed to be a traitor. Because of this thousands died and he earned his nickname “Ivan the Terrible”.
