Throughout the nineteenth century, the United States experimented with different kinds of communities called utopias, which tried to achieve a better life on Earth. New Harmony, notably the first utopia, tried to create a more egalitarian society. As the United States became more and more capitalist, the utopias strove for a different kind of living, embodying the idea that society can always be made better.
