Residential schools started in the late 1800's. They continued throughout the 1900's up until the late 1990's. During the 1970's Pierre Elliot Trudeau was the Prime Minister of Canada. The churches were the ones who ran the residential schools But the government including the Prime Minister funded the residential schools. The Residential schools were places that had a goal to "take the Indian out of the child". By saying this they basically meant that they wanted to isolate kids from their previous cultures and they wanted to adapt them into "white society". They did this by teaching the kids English or French, and they didn’t allow them to talk in their former languages at all. Many kids became very sick in these schools and in some rare cases kids would actually die from the abuse that occurred in these schools.
