The signing of the Edict of Nantes is important to European history because it was one of the 1st countries to accepted Calvinists rights. The Edict of Nantes was signed by King Henry IV to grant the Calvinist of France substantial rights. Before the signing France was primarily Catholic and loyal to the pope. King Henry was like and hated by his people, the Protestants were grateful for the signing but Catholics wanted Henry to give up his Protestant ideas and return to the Catholic Church. The Edict of Nantes helped encourage other countries to accept protestant religions and ideas. Finally, it helped fuel the Reformation started by Martin Luther.
