President John F. Kennedy's role in the Civil Rights Movement was he created the foundation for the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He never got to see the Act pass because he was assassinated on November 22, 1963, not long after he announced he was creating the Civil Rights Act.

President Lyndon B. Johnson's role in the Civil Rights Movement was him finishing what President Kennedy started. Johnson felt that he owed it to Kennedy to pass the act. After Kennedy's assassination, when Johnson was sworn in, he announced that his vision was to see "an end to poverty and racial injustice."
