As soon as he got to Philadelphia he became managing editor of Philadelphia Magazine. He criticized Quakers in the papers even though his own father was a Quaker. 150,000 copies of Common Sense were sold. Common sense was so popular that even John Adams said, “Without the pen of the author of Common Sense, the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain.” In the beginning of the revolutionary war Thomas Paine wrote "American Crisis" which started with “These are the times that try men’s souls.” Talking about Valley Forge.
