In October of 1877, ten thousand cigar makers walked out due to poor working conditions, low wages, and long hours. The strike lasted till February of 1878. No real resolution came about from the strike. Many of the skilled workers went back to work and the less skilled quit or were fired. Many newspapers used the strike's failure to prevent more strikes.
