Based on the argument proposed previously, teacher educators are being challenged to reinvent the way they have traditionally worked. This is no mean task within faculties of education where an aging, conservative teaching force is struggling with ongoing demoralization, fragile academic identities, changing political, social and cultural agendas, reduced funding, a demanding and diversifying clientele and demands 'from above' for ever greater degrees of accountability. Recent news also suggests a move towards a centralized set of professional standards for teachers across Australia and the introduction of a national teacher education accreditation authority.
