6 agos 1945 año - Bombing of Hiroshima

Descripción:

On August 6th, 1945, a B-29 bomber dropped the first ever atomic bomb to be used in war on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The bomb was under development as early as 1939, even before the outbreak of the war. The U.S. began creating the weapon in a secret program called the Manhattan Project after discovering that Germany was developing nuclear weapons of their own. By August of 1945, Germany had surrendered but Japan still wouldn't give up. Franklin D. Roosevelt had just passed leaving President Harry Truman to make a very difficult decision.

His advisers told Truman to organize a huge invasion of Japan, but Truman refused. He said that an invasion on that large of a scale could result in over 1 million casualties. Instead, Truman gave one last chance for the Japanese to surrender stating that if they declined, Japan would be met with "prompt and utter destruction". When Japan insisted on staying in the war, America dropped the bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Three days later, we followed up by dropping a second nuclear bomb on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. These bombings resulted in a surrender from the Japanese on August 15th, 1945. Sadly, the bombings killed about 120,000 civilians on impact and would continue to kill tens of thousands more in weeks to come. This remains a controversial subject to this day, and the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki still remain the only nuclear bombs to be used in the history of war.
