The secession of the Confederate States was the split of certain states from the United States. 7 states split from the United States when Abraham Lincoln was elected, because he wanted to stop the expansion of slavery but these confederate states wanted slaves. Eventually the Confederacy grew larger with the addition of a couple states and created their own government, which was illegal. This lead to the American Civil War.
